Lakes continue to

re-open

An unprecedented late-December reversal of freeze-up continues. Normally the lakes are frozen over on this date.

The winter of 2003-04 had a record late freeze-up after New Year's, but no significant pullback in ice cover during freezing.

The high on December 20 was 6 C. Between December 19 to 21, Lady Evelyn, Obabika, Chiniguchi, Matagamasi, Rabbit and Anima Nipissing lakes lost considerable ice. Makobe and Wawiagami, previously frozen over, have large openings.
