Woodpecker chopping block

A pileated woodpecker mowed into this red pine, smelling of a sawmill. After a rain, the heightened colour of the chips and wood dust revealed its location like a spotlight, attracting the photographer. Taken along the portage between Spitzig Lake and Loon Bay of Lake Temagami.
