Ice-out today at Shimmy Point on Obabika Lake. |
|
ICE-OUT After the winter that almost wasn't, this morning the ice went out on Lake Temagami, our official benchmark for the call. Yesterday the wind came up and has continued today. It cleared most of the lake yesterday and finished the North Arm, the usual holdout, this morning. Clouds continue to obstruct the satellite view. But we had Dick Lewis and Jason Pigeau confirm the North Arm and Bob Farr the southern Hub. Natasha Mathias reports that Obabika Lake went out this morning. Is this a record? In 2010, Temagami went out on April 15. We have Lake Timiskaming's record-setting April 9, 1946, but that leaves Temagami in 1946 a question. This year the Temiskaming Speaker called Timiskaming open on March 31 — a new record for Timiskaming. But 11 days before Temagami. Was Timiskaming 11 days before Temagami in 1946? The interval was somewhere around four or five days between 2006 and 2008. Clearly, there is no certainty from knowing the date for Timiskaming. If 2012 is a record, it is too hard to call.
