Ice-out photo on Lake Temagami, 2019

Taken between Rabbitnose and Long islands looking northeast up the North Arm in the morning. This is the last ice floe on Lake Temagami, our benchmark lake.

We are calling ice-out today as the last observed ice melted away. This is a correction of our tentative call on May 17 that missed the above North Arm floe.

Lake Temagami is our benchmark for the Temagami region, but there may be lakes up in the park that have ice. We will have a better perspective when we have a satellite image.

And today's break-up overtakes 2018's record late date of May 17. Routinely we expect early dates with climate change, so this late break-up is a surprise.

BACKGROUND: 34 years of break-up dates
