Freeze-up: December 23. Since December 10, we have been on the verge of freeze-up. A combination of volatile temperatures and winds has kept one water hole open: west of Bear Island alongside Cattle Island.

Bob Farr of Bear Island estimates that it closed on December 23. The above satellite image from December 25 confirms Lake Temagami, our benchmark, is closed.

Remember, we take a whole-lake view, not just the sled route to the landing. The entire lake must be frozen for our call.

Have a look back to previous freeze-up dates.
