Today, December 19, lake-side observers see no open water and believe our benchmark Lake Temagami froze over last night. So we are calling December 19 freeze-up day.

And this ties last year's freeze-up date. Have a look back.

Yesterday, Ron Miller's photos revealed small open areas on Lake Temagami. After this week-long cold shock, everything on the December 18 satellite image above looks frozen, except the usual holdouts: lakes Wanapitei, Nipissing, Timiskaming and Temagami, and Ottawa River. At this point, it is unusual to see so much water on Nipissing and so little on Temagami. Traditionally, Temagami is behind Nipissing. It also appears Trout Lake at North Bay is open.
