August 21   FIRE BAN LIFTED - Southern Ontario

The fire ban has been lifted for central and southern Ontario.

August 17    FIRE BAN LIFTED - Temagami &

Northeastern Ontario

The fire ban in northeastern Ontario (see map below) has been lifted after rainfall throughout the area. MNR, however, has warned, "that drought conditions remain in many areas of northeastern and central Ontario. Under these conditions, just a little sun is needed to return forested areas to a high or extreme fire hazard." The fire ban remains in effect in central and southern Ontario.

August 16  RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST

A cold front is moving in. The weatherman is predicting rain and high wind. If rain comes, will it be enough?

Makobe fire is out, burning 4.2 hectares, largest fire this season.

August 15  STAY CLEAR OF FIREFIGHTERS

MNR is asking people to stay clear of firefighters as they may hamper efforts and may put themselves in danger. Waterbodies need to be clear so waterbombers and helicopters can scoop. Forest areas need to be clear for waterbombers to drop these loads. Note: a waterbomber drops seven tons of water at 100 mph! Help out by staying clear.

August 10  WILDFIRE WEST OF MAKOBE LAKE

MNR reports a fire just west of Makobe Lake.

August 6  CAMPFIRE STARTS WILDFIRE

Yesterday an improperly extinguished campfire ignited an island on Diamond Lake, just west of the western narrows. MNR aircraft detected the fire and dispatched an attack crew. The fire was extinguished before it could spread to the mainland, but most of the island burned. The campsite was unoccupied and no one was charged. MNR estimates the original campfire had been lit within the previous 72 hours. This could easily have erupted into a major fire in current tinderbox conditions. DON'T LIGHT FIRES!

August 3  INDEX NEAR RECORD HIGH

The forest is getting very dry. The Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index, a fire-hazard barometer, has hit a near-historic high for the last 30 years. "Most logging in the bush has shut down," said Tom Ball, the ministry’s district fire-management supervisor, in an interview.

August 1  MORE FINES

The MNR has still issued a number of warnings against people with open fires. The ban is six days old and there has been lots of news coverage. Consequently, the MNR is turning tougher, charging rather than warning anyone with open fires.

July 31  ENFORCEMENT UP

As a number of recreation-caused fires have started, MNR intends to increase enforcement of bans and lay more charges.

July 29  CHARGES LAID FOR ILLEGAL FIRES

Over the weekend the MNR laid charges for illegal fires in northeastern Ontario. The MNR is concerned that "some people simply aren't taking this seriously."

July 27   FIRES BANNED ACROSS NORTHEASTERN ONTARIO

Notice:
Campfires banned
Travel remains unrestricted
Use portable gas stoves

High temperatures and lack of rain have raised the potential for forest fire to a "crisis level." Consequently, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) set northeastern Ontario's fire hazard at Extreme and the area (see map below) is now designated a Restricted Fire Zone where no open fires are permitted. This prohibits campers from using fires for heating and cooking.

Fire bans occur periodically, though this is the first this summer. Northwestern Ontario had one earlier this season. The workaround, though not as fun, is to bring a stove.

Failure to comply could result in a fine up to $1,000, financial responsibility for fires caused, and a jail term.

For more information call the Ministry of Natural Resources' North Bay office at 705-475-5550.

Restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

Restricted Fire Zone

Southeastern boundary was French River, Lake Nipissing and Mattawa River. Northern boundary is latitude 50 degree 30 minutes. Fire ban has been extended to southern Ontario (not shown on map), as far south as Peterborough, including Algonquin Park and Bruce Peninsula.
