DECEMBER 21, 2019 Freeze-up: Dec 19! With persistent extreme cold and little wind on December 19, we are going with Bob Farr's call from Bear Island for freeze-up that day. (Stephen Battis reported the Southwest Arm had closed that day.) A flyover by Ron Miller on, and this satellite image from, December 20 add confirmation. The only visible open water in the satellite image is on southern Lake Timiskaming. As with our practice, Ottertooth calls freeze-up over the Temagami region based on a whole-lake freeze of Lake Temagami. Have a look back to previous freeze-up dates.
DECEMBER 18, 2019 Close, but not yet There is still open water in the Southwest Arm next to Narrows Island and behind Alexander Island in the Hub. Here are three photos from Wabikon, Bear Island and Narrows Island.
DECEMBER 15, 2019 A great view on the satellite image A great view, but not much change from the December 11 image. Ferguson Bay has more ice. Nipissing is closed and the shallow north end of Timiskaming is too.
DECEMBER 12, 2019 The usual holdouts are open On the satellite image, open water is visible (arrows) on Lake Temagami's Ferguson Bay and around its Hub. Wanapitei is clearly open, but Timiskaming is blocked. Nipissing, through the clouds, appears to be closed, and should be at this stage
DECEMBER 6, 2019 Miller does a flyover with his phone Ron Miller, who always has the best view, was in the air today over Lake Temagami.
DECEMBER 6, 2019 The usual holdouts are open Freeze-up is now down to lakes Timiskaming, Wanapitei, Kipawa and Temagami. Temagami is the most advanced.
DECEMBER 5, 2019 Large and deep lakes remain Open water is limited to the largest lakes and the medium-sized, deep-water lakes. Nipissing is the next to close.
NOVEMBER 16, 2019 Freeze-up watch begins The first satellite view of freeze-up reveals ice on Lake Nipissing and the north end of Lake Timiskaming. Small lakes are iced up.
