After a week of cloud cover, I desperately reached back two days and pulled out this false-colour image for a peak beneath those clouds. When reading these images, the darkest areas may be open water. But thin ice with no snow cover will appear dark and delude us into thinking it is ice free.

As usual with late freeze-up, the deepest lakes are the last to go and still open: Temagami, Timiskaming, Kipawa (far right) and Wanapitei (barely visible far left). Rabbit Lake suggests one arm may be open. Lake Nipissing (bottom) is freezing over.

On Lake Temagami, the Northeast and Southwest arms are freezing.

       KEY

Black open water or thin, clear ice
Dull/ dark blue thin ice with little or no snow cover
Bright turquoise thick ice, snow-covered ice or snow on unforested land  (e.g. clearcuts, farmland)
