OLD GROWTH FOREST Old-growth forest is one of the great natural wonders of Temagami. In 1988, the announcement of its presence in Temagami shook up the forest industry and started the snowball of public concern over the large issue of old-growth forest protection in eastern Canada. A chain of events led to some preservation of ancient forests. But in Temagami, as elsewhere, it remains threatened, primarily by logging. Old growth is not just old trees but a diverse forest ecosystem, usually containing a mix of tree species, ages and stages — old trees, standing snags, deadfalls, etc. Big, old spectacular trees easily catch our attention and that of the media, often fooling us into thinking that old growth is just old trees. New species of old growth found, will be logged Old-growth spruce and jack pine is found for first time in Temagami, but is also heading for the sawmill. Dispelling the many myths floating around. |
