Satellite photo of ice freeze-up in Temagami, 2007

Posted Saturday, Dec 1, 2007                                                                         Photo: NASA/NOAA

Freeze-up begins

The shallower lakes have frozen over.

The lower satellite image (from a second bird) was taken later in the day when southern Lake Temagami was free of clouds. These are the first peeks through the clouds that the satellites have offered since November 23.

Freeze-up began in the smallest ponds about a week ago. The temperature has not been above freezing since November 26 when progress accelerated.

A high of minus 19 C today will push it quickly.

False colour, like infrared, enhances the view of ice and snow.

       KEY

Black open water or thin, clear ice
Dull/ dark blue thin ice
Bright turquoise thick ice, or snow on unforested land  (e.g. clearcuts, farmland)
