Satellite image of ice break-up in Temagami, 2009

Posted Fri Apr 17, 2009                                                                         Photo: NASA/NOAA

Break-up rolls north

Break-up approaches Temagami as warm air rolls north. This satellite image reveals the transition from ice-free lakes in Muskoka (near Lake Simcoe) to frozen lakes in Temagami and north.

False colour, like infrared, enhances the view of ice and snow.

       KEY

Black open water or thin, clear ice
Dull/ dark blue thin ice
Bright turquoise thick ice, or snow on unforested land  (e.g. clearcuts, farmland)
