About The Author

Brian A. Back was a guide and staffman at Keewaydin in the 70s and early 80s. Brian was born and raised in North Bay, just south of Temagami in northern Ontario, and spent his childhood summers at his family cottage in the Northeast Arm of Lake Temagami. He guided at Camp Wabikon on Lake Temagami from 1970 to 1975 before moving to Keewaydin in 1976. Brian worked on The Keewaydin Way, the history of Keewaydin, between 1978 and 1983.

He co-founded the Temagami Wilderness Society in 1985 and became its executive director. The Society successfully stopped logging expansion in Temagami and, in the process, the group became the largest single-issue environment group in Canada. In 1990, he founded and directed Earthroots Coalition. This group became active in the successful opposition to the James Bay hydro-electric plans for the Great Whale River in Quebec and in opposing logging plans for old-growth forest in northern Ontario.

Today, he lives with his wife and three sons in Wisconsin, plodding away at the next edition of the Keewaydin Way and a history of Temagami, while operating this Web site.
